Three-day event at the University of Ghana to highlight the importance of green spaces, environmental sustainability and inclusive urban development.

Accra, Ghana — The Flower Community GH, in collaboration with the University of Ghana and other partners, is set to organise the Flower Community Fair 2026 from Friday, 4th to Sunday, 6th December 2026, at the Academic Freedom Road, University of Ghana, Legon.

The three-day event, which will be held under the theme “Greening the City, Healing the Mind,” seeks to promote awareness of the importance of green spaces in urban communities and their contributions to mental wellbeing, environmental sustainability and inclusive urban infrastructure.

The theme, which is further explained by the focus “Green Spaces, Mental Wellbeing & Inclusive Urban Infrastructure,” underscores the growing need to integrate nature into urban planning and development, particularly as Ghana's cities continue to experience rapid urbanisation.

Promoting Green Spaces for Healthier Communities

Green spaces, including home gardens, public parks, community gardens, urban forests and landscaped environments, play important roles in improving environmental quality and enhancing the physical and psychological wellbeing of urban residents.

Beyond their aesthetic value, plants and green environments contribute to improved air quality, temperature regulation, biodiversity conservation and the creation of recreational spaces that encourage social interaction.

Research has also demonstrated that access to green environments can support mental wellbeing by reducing stress, encouraging physical activity and providing opportunities for relaxation and social engagement.

The Flower Community Fair 2026 therefore provides an opportunity to draw public attention to the relationship between environmental sustainability and human wellbeing.

Encouraging Community Participation in Urban Greening

The event is expected to provide a platform for conversations on the role of individuals, communities, institutions and businesses in creating greener and healthier urban environments.

The fair's theme is particularly relevant to the growing advocacy for home and community gardening in Ghana, where limited urban spaces can be transformed into productive and environmentally beneficial green areas.

Home gardens, container gardens, rooftop gardens and community gardening initiatives offer practical opportunities for households to reconnect with nature while contributing to urban biodiversity, improved surroundings and, where food crops are cultivated, household food security.

The event also presents an opportunity to strengthen public appreciation of ornamental plants, flowers and landscaping as important components of sustainable urban development.

Partnerships for Environmental Sustainability

The Flower Community Fair 2026 brings together institutions and organisations committed to environmental sustainability, community development and social wellbeing.

Institutions featured on the event poster include the University of Ghana, the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, and Kamah Concepts.

The event also acknowledges support from several partners and sponsors, including Star Oil, Canada, Cowater Ghana, SIGRA, Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Coca-Cola and The Browne Foundation.

These partnerships highlight the importance of collaboration among academic institutions, private organisations, civil society and community groups in promoting environmentally responsible urban development.

A Call for Greener and Healthier Cities

As urban populations continue to increase, the need to protect existing green spaces and create new ones has become increasingly important.

The Flower Community Fair 2026 draws attention to the fact that urban greenery should not be regarded merely as decoration but as an essential component of healthy, resilient and inclusive cities.

The event offers an opportunity for gardening enthusiasts, environmental advocates, students, urban planners, horticulturists, researchers and the general public to appreciate the contributions of plants and green spaces to sustainable living.

By promoting the connection between nature and mental wellbeing, the fair reinforces the message that greening Ghana's cities is an investment in both environmental health and human wellbeing.
