Garden For All (G4A) has announced a free gardening training programme for pensioners in Ghana, scheduled for November and December 2026. The initiative aims to promote healthy ageing, household food security, sustainable vegetable production and active retirement through practical home gardening.

The programme, which will be organised in three locations across Ghana, will provide pensioners with practical gardening skills to help them grow fresh vegetables at home, improve household nutrition and engage in productive activities during retirement.

Garden For All is therefore inviting pensioners' associations, retired workers' groups and other organised retirement associations to express interest in participating in the free training programme.

Free Home Gardening Training for Pensioners in Ghana

The upcoming Garden For All pensioners gardening programme forms part of the organisation's commitment to promoting home gardening, sustainable agriculture and access to safe food for every household.

The initiative recognises the important role gardening can play in improving the physical, mental and social well-being of older adults.

Through practical demonstrations, participating pensioners will learn affordable and sustainable techniques for growing vegetables within their homes and communities.

The training will be particularly beneficial to retirees who wish to establish backyard gardens, container gardens or small-scale vegetable production systems.

What Will Pensioners Learn During the Free Gardening Training?

The free gardening training programme will introduce participants to practical and affordable methods of vegetable production.

Key areas of training will include:

  1. Home Garden Establishment: Selecting suitable locations and preparing spaces for vegetable cultivation.
  2. Container and Sack Gardening: Growing vegetables in containers, sacks and other affordable materials where land is limited.
  3. Seed Selection and Nursery Establishment: Selecting quality seeds, raising healthy seedlings and transplanting vegetables.
  4. Soil Fertility and Composting: Improving soil health through composting and sustainable soil management.
  5. Vegetable Pest and Disease Management: Identifying common vegetable pests and diseases and applying safe management practices.
  6. Water Management: Applying simple and efficient irrigation techniques for home vegetable production.
  7. Harvesting and Utilisation: Harvesting fresh vegetables and using home-grown produce to improve household nutrition.

The programme will also provide guidance on startup seed requirements to support pensioners interested in establishing their own gardens after the training.

Benefits of Gardening for Pensioners and Retirees

Gardening is increasingly recognised as a beneficial recreational and productive activity for older adults.

For pensioners in Ghana, home gardening can provide several important benefits.

1. Promoting Healthy and Active Ageing

Gardening encourages regular physical activity through activities such as planting, watering, weeding and harvesting. These activities can help pensioners maintain an active lifestyle while engaging in meaningful outdoor recreation.

2. Improving Mental Health and Emotional Well-being

Engaging with plants and nature can support relaxation, reduce stress and provide a sense of accomplishment.

For retirees adjusting to life after active employment, gardening can offer a rewarding daily routine.

3. Improving Household Food Security

Home vegetable gardening enables pensioners to produce fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, pepper, okra, lettuce and other nutritious crops for household consumption.

This can improve access to fresh produce while reducing dependence on purchased vegetables.

4. Reducing Household Food Expenditure

Producing vegetables at home can help pensioners reduce household food expenses, particularly during periods of increasing food prices.

5. Encouraging Social Interaction

Community gardening creates opportunities for pensioners to interact, share experiences and build supportive relationships.

Garden For All hopes to encourage participating associations to establish group gardens that can serve as recreational and learning centres for their members.

Garden For All to Organise Training in Three Locations

The free gardening training programme will be conducted in three locations in Ghana during November and December 2026.

The specific venues and training dates will be communicated following consultations and arrangements with interested pensioners' associations.

Associations are encouraged to contact Garden For All early to express interest and discuss possible arrangements for their members.

Garden For All Promotes Safe Food for Every Home

Garden For All is a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting home and community gardening, safe food production, sustainable agriculture and household food security.
